Horse Racing Guide - Horseracing Beginnings

Horseracing GuideHorse Racing goes back many centuries and there are many different accounts of when it all first began but what is certain for as long as there has been horses it is part of their make up and mankind that encourages them to race and go as fast as possible. Horse Racing Betting as we know it today is all about horses that are thoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds are now to be found in all parts of the world as the breeding of the race horse now is a global business.

Horse Racing today has two main codes of racing and you can place a tote bet on either codes of the sport.

Flat Racing
Flat racing is as the name suggests run on the flat and there are no fences and the horses are usually much younger in age as the aim is all about speed and the flat horses start their career at the age of two and the flat races are run over 5 furlongs to 20 furlongs and are started from stalls. The flat racing season runs from mid-March to mid-November and the feature race of the season is the Epsom Derby.

National Hunt
Jump racing is run over obstacles and is more about stamina than flat racing with the minimum distance at least 2 miles and the horses have to jump a number of obstacles. For some this is far more appealing and much more enjoyable to watch. Jump racing is run throughout the year but its main season runs from November until the end of April. The feature race meetings are the Cheltenham Festival and the Aintree Grand National.
