Horseracing GuideWith the different codes of Horse racing there are a number types of racing that you can a tote bet on and the most popular are :

  • Maiden Horse Race
    Maiden races a relevant to both codes of the sport and are for horse that have not won a race. Horses can run as long as they like in a Maiden as long as they have not won a race and if they have won they will then get given extra weight if they wish to continue running in these races.
  • Handicap Race
    What is important to understand about handicaps is that the horse that is considered the best by an official called the handicapper will carry the biggest weight. There are usually 2 to 3 handicap races on each race card.
  • Novice Horse Racing
    This is mainly horse that run in the National Hunt Code in Hurdles and steeplechases for horses that haven't won such a race prior to that season.
  • Bumper Races
    A recent trend that has really caught on the UK and is a flat race for young jump horses (also called National Hunt Flat Races). Between 2 and 2 1/2 miles.
  • Group 1, 2, 3 Horseraces
    These are the best races and bring together the best horses and are the most valuable.
  • English Classics
    The 5 highest quality Group 1 flat races make up the English Classics: English 2000 and 1000 Guineas, Derby, Oaks (confined to fillies), St Leger... The winners of these are the crème de la crème of thoroughbreds. Frequently the winner of the English Derby is the best horse in Europe.
  • Listed
    Just below Group standard but still quite prestigious, it is a 'weight for age' race.
